We recommend that the ideal height of your grass should be around 5 — 7cm before you cut it, and this goes for all of our grass seed mixtures. This is simply because if the grass has been able to reach this height, it is viable and growing well, and can therefore be cut. Set your lawn mower on the highest setting. The aim is to give the grass a trim, not a front back and sides shave! Ensure to remove all the clippings after you have mown your lawn - if you leave them on a newly seeded lawn, you could be contributing to thatch which would undo all your hard work.
In addition, dead grass sitting dormant on top of your lawn will stop much needed sunlight getting to your new grass. Now, going forward, your recommended mowing height will change. When newly planted grass seed initially starts to sprout, it will appear sparse.
However, this is a sign that you have successfully prepared! In a matter of weeks, this will produce a tangle of healthy, lush grass blades. Although it might be tempting, you must avoid cutting your young grass until is firmly established itself in the soil. Most types of grass seed have a maturation period of 30 to 60 days.
If your seedlings are cut too soon, you will most likely do irreparable damage, so resist the urge. In most instances, a minimum 4 weeks must pass after the seeds have germinated before you can begin thinking about mowing.
Using a push mower to cut grass produces quite a lot of compaction, which is why young grass must be provided with an adequate amount of time to gain age and strength. So, when do you begin to mow your newly seeded grass? Timing is of essence in determining when to mow new grass. Generally, four weeks need to pass after the grass seeds have germinated before beginning to mow your new grass. Grass seedlings lack strong leaf blades that withstand compaction and cutting from a mower.
So, the turf grass should be allowed to gain some strength before cutting them. Mowing too soon also makes the mower compacts the soil at the same time, which contributes to poor root spread as the seedlings struggle to gain strength in the ground.
Mow the grass appropriately to avoid severe die back. Use a mower with sharp blades to cut dry grass so that the turf is not torn or ripped as it is cut low. Maintain a 2- or 3-inch height.
Cutting lower than this range would make invading weeds and heat stress invite pests and pathogens into the newly seeded lawn. Mow in varied directions to help the grass remain upright and properly cut. Avoid cutting in one direction as this would make the blades lay down and compact into the soil. Grass height determines mowing time. Sprouts ready for mowing are those that have reached 3- or 4-inch height.
