First generation networks provided simple analogue voice telephony; second current generation added some data services like fax and e-mail to basic voice service, with higher rate data capabilities expected over the next few years.
The Third Generation of mobile telecommunications should be capable of providing data rates of up to 2 megabits per second, in addition to conventional voice, fax and data services. This offers the prospect of high-resolution video and multimedia services on the move, such as mobile office services, virtual banking and on-line billing, home shopping, video conferencing, on-line entertainment and Internet access.
Basically, it's faster and offers a lot more extras. The International Telecommunications Union ITU is coordinating the international harmonization of standards for 3G, working towards the concept of a family of standards IMT which can all work together, rather than a single standard. This ability to use devices on different networks is called roaming and will be made possible by satellite and land based networks. GSM is the name of a land mobile pan-European digital cellular communications system.
This means it is a network in which information is transferred between subscribers. The phone basically changes from one GPRS network to another without any circuits being set up. How is UMTS different from current second generation networks?
The rapid evolution of UMTS has made it the more dominant of the two technologies. It is fully compatible with GSM — the world's most widely used mobile communication technology. Normally when consumers and businesses select a carrier for cell phone calls and mobile Web access, they do not ask which technology the company uses.
This significant oversight can result in customer dissatisfaction because national and international 3G coverage and data speeds vary greatly.
Skip to content. What is GSM? What is EDGE? What is GPRS? I always think what does it mean? But your explanation provide me a better understanding of the mobile network.
But, my mobile shows a "F" sign in the status bar when I turn on the mobile data. What does that mean? Is the F-Character appearing instead of the usual mobile symbols like H or 3G or is it appearing in addition to those symbols? If the character is appearing in addition to the other symbols, perhaps it is just an app notifictation if Internet is turned on, apps usually connect and get new messages.
For example, Facebook is using a f for its notifications. Really helpful. Thanks a lot for giving an elaborated notes. I was behind this for dome days. Now I am happy. Once again thank you very much.
Good note. I have added those releases to my article with some explanation to make it clear. Moderation: Please do not ask new question in existing topics.
