Looking back, this was obviously a red herring, but because I went into Sorority Row thinking that it was going to be another dumb slasher I thought that was all the ambition the filmmakers had so they were just going to take the obvious route. They even have a whole bit at the end with Kyle actually having a mental breakdown and chasing Jessica and Cassidy with an ax. Then BAM! So what say you? Filmmakers employ a variety of tactics to frighten audiences. The jump scare is the most obvious, thanks to its jarring abruptness and accompanying loud music sting. Its complete opposite is the understated, subtle background scare. This type of scare can easily go unnoticed, making it even more potent for those who spot it.
The background scare features imagery, usually a figure, lurking in the background without any telltale music cues or camerawork to announce their presence. Often the camera pans wide, scans the scene, or focuses on a character at the forefront to further blend the imagery into the background.
Ari Aster made frequent use of the background scare in Hereditary. The most obvious use of this scare tactic came in the third act, in which Peter Alex Wolff wakes in bed and ventures out into the house, unaware his possessed mom, Annie Toni Collette , hovers above him on the ceiling. The staggered gasps from the audience as some viewers spotted Annie before others, and some not at all, created a communal feeling of unease.
Aster packed Hereditary full of subtle visual clues and scary moments. Images of the dead clung to the shadowed walls of the Graham home. The Grahams were constantly under surveillance by a sinister presence, but they remained blissfully unaware. Mike Flanagan took the concept and ran with it in The Haunting of Hill House , making a game for eagle-eyed viewers to spot the hidden ghosts within every episode.
Katy lays on the floor, believing her nightmarish ordeal is over. She's unaware that Eric has opened his eyes below her Plot hole : It seems unlikely any mental institution would let a patient out to visit home for any length of time as happens in the movie with the killer and his mother.
Suggested correction: Unlikely, but still possible. Almost every workplace has a situation in which a person is bending the rules. Diane: Slater is a dying breed. Trivia : The deformed, mentally challenged killer, masked too with a mean overly protective mother seems to have taken inspiration from the first 2 Friday the 13th movies. Question : When the girls are drinking together in a bedroom, one of them comments about her mother saying that she was "born with a silver spoon" in her mouth.
She jokes that the spoon is actually in her nose. A group of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of their house-sister after a prank gone wrong, only to be stalked by a serial killer. During a party in the Theta-Pi sorority house, the sister Megan plays a prank with her unstable boyfriend Garrett simulating an OD after using pills.
Her sisters Jessica, Claire, Ellie, Cassidy and Garrett's sister Chugs suggest to dump her "body" in a lake and the stressed Garrett sticks the tire iron through the Megan's chest killing her. Cassidy decides to call the police, but the sisters are convinced to dispose the body in a shaft and keep in secret under the leadership of Jessica that blackmails Cassidy.
Eight months later, in their graduation party, the sisters receive a creepy message with the picture of the tire iron in the beginning of a nightmarish night. Rather than risk their futures by reporting the crime, the friends agree to cover it up. Cassidy and company come to regret the decision a year later when someone begins sending them videos of the night Megan died, and they fall victim to a deadly stalker.
After finding out a guy cheated on their sister, sorority house Theta Pi play a simple prank on him.
